THE SURVEILLANCE CAMERA PLAYERS
Amnesia, 2002

posted by curators on Friday April 26, @07:07AM

The Surveillance Camera Players (SCP) are by a New York-based group of situationist-inspired pranksters who manifest their opposition to the installation of surveillance cameras in public places by performing silent, specially adapted plays directly in front of surveillance cameras.

On May 5 will be the world premiere of a new work, Amnesia. In addition SCP is organizing two walking tours of the Soho area.

The Surveillance Camera Players (SCP) were formed in November 1996 by a New York-based group of situationist-inspired pranksters who manifest their opposition to the installation of surveillance cameras in public places by performing silent, specially adapted plays directly in front of surveillance cameras.

For Open_Source_Art_Hack, the SCP-New York will perform Amnesia in front of a webcam installed in Times Square by a privacy-insensitive company called Earthcam. Based upon Denis Beaubois's pioneering "surveillance theater" piece In the Event of Amnesia the City Will Recall (1996), Amnesia is scripted by the SCP-New York's Art Toad and has never been performed before. The SCP-New York hope that Amnesia will highlight the imperatives that led to the group's founding and have guided it ever since, i.e. the importance of artistic sensibility to political struggle and of political commitment to artistic endeavor.

Amnesia will be performed live at 3:00 on May 5 in front of the 47th Street Digital Camera store, east side of 7th Ave between 46th and 47th Streets, Times Square.

It will be viewable then online at http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/ (click "Camera 5")

Video documenation of the performance will be on view at the New Museum's Window on Broadway at 583 Broadway, Manhattan throughout the exhibition.

Soho Walking Tours

The Surveillance Camera Players will also organize two walking tours of the Soho area on Saturday 11th and Saturday 18th May from 2-3pm, assembling first in the New Museum lobby. Members of the public who accompany the artists will be given maps of the area showing the locations and different types of surveillance cameras in the streets around them.
