Carnivore, 2001

Carnivore-—is a networked art project in two parts. The first part is CarnivorePE, a Windows application which performs packet-sniffing on a specific local area network and serves the resulting data stream via the net. The second part consists of an unlimited number of client applications which tap into this data stream and interpret it in creative ways.

Carnivore-—is inspired by DCS1000, a piece of software used by the FBI to perform electronic wiretaps. Until recently, DCS1000 was known by its nickname "Carnivore."

Carnivore-—is created by RSG, a collective of computer artists from cities around the world.

RSG (Radical Software Group) is a collective of computer artists. The clients and servers in Open_Source_Art_Hack are by Alex Galloway, Joshua Davis with Branden Hall + Shapeshifter, entropy8zuper!, Lisa Jevbratt, and Paul Johnson.

Carnivore-—the title of which is inspired by the nickname given to DCS1000, a piece of software used by the FBI to perform electronic wiretaps—-is a networked art project in two parts. Carnivore first performs an electronic wiretap at its installation locale (in this case the New Museum Zenith Media Lounge), creating a steady stream of raw data containing all the e-mail, web and other traffic generated at this location. It then feeds this to a series of artist-made interfaces—-called "Carnivore Clients"—-for visualization and animation. Since no two data networks are alike, each installation of Carnivore is different. It responds like a living organism to the traffic it encounters. In this show, the various clients will be presented on the wall of the Lounge and on a plasma screen in the New Museum Window on Broadway, each interpreting the same data flows in very different ways. TITLE: RSG-CSCPU-4 (2002) ARTIST: Paul Johnson, with RSG MEDIA: mixed media (plastic, computer, software) TITLE: Zero Client (2001) ARTIST: Radical Software Group MEDIA: Software/Visual Basic wall pieces: TITLE: amalgamatmosphere (2001) ARTIST: Joshua Davis + Branden Hall + Shapeshifter, with RSG MEDIA: mixed media (plastic, computer, software) TITLE: Out of the Ordinary (2002) ARTIST: Lisa Jevbratt, with RSG MEDIA: mixed media (plastic, computer, software)

entropy8zuper!'s Guernica (2001) client uses the data stream to create a vide game-like narrative, which, in their words: "MULTINATIONAL CORPORATE STRATEGIES DEFINE THE POLITICAL AGENDA OF YOUR GOVERNMENT - ENTROPY8ZUPER! INTERNET DATA CLIENTS INVESTIGATE THE BITS THAT STREAM THROUGH YOUR COMPUTER AND EXPOSE THEIR TRUE CONTENT - INFORMATION EQUALS PROPAGANDA"

Radical Software Group, Zero Client (2001)

Paul Johnson, RSG-CSCPU-4 (2002)

Joshua Davis + Branden Hall + Shapeshifter, amalgamatmosphere (2001)

Lisa Jevbratt, Out of the Ordinary (2002)
